WELL FOR HEAVENS SAKE… LET’S ROAR FOR HILLARY CLINTON, THEN!
Hello,
I hate to blow up your bubble but I would like the primary sources on this. Because what I have is a totally different story. The first recorded deaf applause was at Gallaudet during the speech given in 1870s The person that gave the speech that drew a very tremendous “praise” by the deaf was none other than Ulysses Grant, the running presidential candidate of the day and a former but famous Civil War general.
It was recorded that General Grant was displaying a very puzzled face at the conclusion of his speech as he was dedicating the Chapel Hall building (if I remember correctly the right building). And within few minutes later, his face brightened up as someone explained the meaning of these raised arms and waving hands riding across the crowded room.
There would be possiblities that the deaf residential schools had witnessed the raising arms and waving hands for decades prior to the Grant’s Gallaudet visit. For instance, few were seen at the welcoming crowd at American School when Monroe arrived the time of Federalist meeting in 1821.
Hilarious! Out with the actual documented history, I absolutely loved your vlog.
LOL!!!! I like your story and very intresting!!!! Thumb up!!!!
Keep going your next vlog!!!! Smile
At first I couldnt tell if this is a fake or not. If its a fake then LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If its true then that sucks we did this for nothing! Screw hearing world!!!
Awesome. You’re my favorite vlog of all..
keep going for some more..
wink
THANKS for this information. I never did feel comfortable for waving hands in the air and I didn’t feel for inspiration. Now I know more of it and not use it anymore when I actually don’t feel right due it isn’t DEAF WAY. I go with DEAF WAY. Go for vibration noise as our deaf noise. Keep on research on this for our deaf community.
true or false, that story is hilarious, and it’s a good representation of Audism. Even if the story is not true, I can see it happening in that situation, and it would be no surprise — all because of Audism! Thanks to all you ignorant hearing people! Yack!
Hahaha it is sooooo funny!
Also it is interesting to read what Joseph wrote.
At Gallaudet, during the annual Homecoming Spirit Week, there were various contests for each class to compete and win. One of the contests was the most loudest scream. At the cafeteria, after dinner, a few cafeteria workers were the judges to listen and decide which class screamed the loudest. It was fun!
(I felt sorry for cafeteria workers to endure thru the contest… haha). What a memory!
Hey,
interesting, your story so I do not know.

Yeah, I remember that past when I shake the hands out of air from our church in Texas even SBCD. most of them shake the hands out of air. I did not realize that you reasearch. I did not know that part even I don’t think of part as I puzzled for long years. The shake the hands out of air spreaded in Texas last 1989 or 1990 after Gally protest by DPN.
By the way, the past I do roar the voice as high spirit by feeling at the church, Texas School for the Deaf, Deaf Camp, etc.. Today, I don’t use since I getting old farts, lol. I like to be quiet because I am depend on vibrate calling from my sons or friends or outside waves calling such as accident or house fall down or storms, etc… that I am depend but I still roaring calling for Deaf Power to keep strong than AGB as God spread his words that he give us his way what he knew the predicts. Thumb up!
That’s very interesting story, but I recalled my college days when I was in Dr. Eastman’s ASL Translation classes. He told me his story that the handwaving applause was brought to America after he participated in Laurent Clerc’s birthplace unveiling ceremony, in which he was one of participants. After the unveiling performed, he noticed the audience, who was mostly Deaf French waving hands when they applaused. Upon his return home, he shared the new thing he learned from the ceremony with Gallaudet students, faculty and staff members, then the handwaving applause began here in America. Thus, I don’t know if the information about the applause starting at the mentioned convention is correct. Unfortunately, Dr. Eastman, whom I have always respected and still do, passed away about a couple of years. He would have corrected the information had he seen the information here.
To the commenters: Of course, the story isn’t true, the vlog clearly explained that two of his research methods were from digging into the backyard and that the rest was purely made up. He was merely providing the story for entertainment and, perhaps, to see whether any of you would fall for his made-up story. The only part that is true is that deaf crowds do LOVE “applauding” through voices.
Anyway, this story was hilarious and keep them coming. You always crack me up!
i love your scream and wonderful story!!!
it was ok to me
Is this vlog true? Deaf can applaud any way they feel comfortable with.
Freddie Maddox – were you attend to the New Mexico School for the Deaf in a short term?
