Well that is the way of life for most of us deafies, hearies assume THAT ALL DEAFIES CAN READ LIPS….. wouldn’t it be nice to meet alot of hearies who could ACTUALLY SIGN but they say OH ONE TIME WHEN I WAS VERY YOUNG I LEARNED THE A B C’S from the scouts, or had a deaf friend once ( what?/ aren’t u friends with them any more???) Hearies can be and are iggnorant about deafness , and if they treat us badly it is basically cos they do not know how to deal with deafies in reality,, So that cartoon does have lots of merit, if not humour, it smacks with reality,,
BTW some one asked who the cartoonist was the name was written right on the cartoon and on top of it as well,,,,,,,,,, JESSICA GEIGER…So kudos to Geiger and her cartoon…

That’s facts that’s way how it happens every day… It never stop amazing hearing people when we deaf said we can’t hear… Oh well, that’s life…
I can’t stand translation software. It doesn’t have the human brain behind it to put words into proper English context. Here’s my stab at this:

In English syntax: I’m from Belgium and writing in French. True, the hearing are always asking if I read lips…that annoys me. Sometimes, I ask one if he can sign (read signs)…good job.
do y’all understand that most “hearies” just dont know? I”m fortunate to havetaken ASL and become friends with many deaf people but most hearing folk dont have the time to try and understand. cut us some slack.

wow thats good point hearing not learn sign language if talk to deaf people anywhere anytime I can read lip not too fast but I am glad to teach sign langauge if I understand the lip reading thats cool

That is very true. It is a common theory of the way of Deaf people and Hearing people asking whether they can read the Deaf signs and read the Hearing lips. That is life.

Many hearing people who do know SOME sign language are TERRIFIED of actually using it. They worry about using the wrong sign and having the deaf person think that they are stupid.

I am a ‘hearie’ and have been studying ASL including deaf culture/language for about 4 months now…not a lot of time..but enough for my eyes to be opened to the deaf world. This comic strip does nothing for me other than point out the obvious. We’re all humans…it’s human nature to fear or avoid things we don’t understand. In a typical day, most hearies don’t need to know sign in order to get by. Deafies are a more minority and, therefore, rely on communicating with hearies on a daily basis. It’s not fair but it’s to be expected deafies should be able to talk with hearies. This will be no quick transition but hearies will one day understand the importance, value, and variety deafies and the deaf language brings to the world. I have already started talking to most everyone I know about opening their eyes to deaf culture and am happy to say that most hearies ‘get it’ if you’re just a bit patient. I’m happy to talk with anyone about this and/or any suggestions you may have to best show the hearing ppl the ways of the deafies [sounds like a good title to Deaf Ninja.

Now here’s the perfect example of a gentleman who is totally hearing and anothe person who is totally deaf. How hard is that to comprehend? duh… But I like this one. That one really made me laugh. Now that’s a kicker when you see this. lol

Why do hearing people still believe all deafies can read lips?
That’s old joke! Often hearies ask me if I can read lips and told them depend on their attitude! Simple.
For real I’ve heard hearring people telling me they dont know how to read sign right after they ask if I lip read! Including the oral deaf people!
i understand cyn said oral deaf people but mostly or some deaf people are lazy read lips same i do sometimes lazy read lips that i understand that there is 3 different read lips that i been study on hearing number one speak too fast could not catch number two speak normal person will understand number 3 speak too slow not normal that how i can figure out that sometime when hearing could not understand deaf culture have to explain to remind hold your speak repeat sometime hearing learn fast will pick up sign langauge sometime hearing hard head could not pick up sign langauge mean 2 different one good listen best second not listen poorly that why we are team to teach both world like sign language and catch words speak that why we need to learn challange each other
Yea, It happen to me many time and i would OPEN MY MOUTH AND CLOSE TO HEARING PPL’S FACE so they will know that i cant read thier lips and big mistunerstood. hehe
The cartoon shows true story for Deaf’s feelings. I had most commons. Hope the cartoons will be helpful to people to understand. I do totally agree with this cartoon. I haven’t gut to say ” Can you read my sign language?” I usually use my face say No with sad dog eyes. I used sign to them paper and pen. They understand what I am saying. We have no problems. I am very patience with people. In world are high percents of hearing people. I don’t blame on them. I am sure someone taught from old fashion ways. They would learn when we tell them truth.
I always ask ppl if they know or read sign language and they always make faces with big puzzlement or guilty look on their faces. I always enjoy that. This is so common that ppl ask me if I’m a lip reader. Arrgghh….!!
I was born and raised by deaf grandparents and until I reached the age of 5, I only spoke in sign language. At the age of 3 my father married a deaf lady. She was an excellent lip-reader and taught me how to speak. Whenever we went to the store I would explain to the clerks what she wanted. I decided to play a trick on her by keeping my lips tight so that she could not lip-read. After a few slaps across the lips she broke that habit of mine.
