Nintendo’s Luigi gesture in ASL
15 01 2007"I bought Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour for Nintendo GameCube and has been playing addictive since July 28th 2003. I have played every character, include secret characters. I enjoyed seeing the characters actions & behaviors after the ball got into the hole. Each character has different actions & behaviors such as birdie (happy), par (calm), eagle (excite), bogey (sad), and double bogey (upset). One day, I am using the character, Luigi. I noticed something bizarre about his actions after birdie the hole: " Submitted via from the article: daveynin’s thing.
UPDATE (Jan 16, 2006): The commenter submitted the same article posted in Electronic Gaming Monthly: LETTER OF THE MONTH, it said:
"I am profoundly deaf, and my main method of communication is American Sign Language (ASL). I bought Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (GC) and have been playing it obsessively since July. I’ve noticed that each character has different actions and behaviors depending on how they score on a hole. One day, while playing Luigi, I noticed something bizarre. luigi did the sign for lesbian for people who dont get it. the sign is placing a L at ur chin. but im very sure that nintendo did not make luigi do that on purpose. Luigi was just doing an L diagonally for his name nothing wacked out.

Good catch..but uhm I think, I would go for the Italian gesture..along with the letter L, with a facial feature..of his goatie. I don’t think they could figure out where would you put the letter L…definantely not on the forehead, or sticking out pointing up..like he would be shooting a gun to the sky…. so graphically, I think the person who did this..movement, was pretty smart, yet maybe not?

This tidbit appeared in the form of a letter to EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly) a few years ago by a Deaf person, and was published with a funny response from the editors. The writer explained that Luigi was doing the ASL sign for “lesiban,” and the editors thought it was funny enough to reply to in the magazine.

Come on….you people don’t know what the ASL sign for “lesbian” is??
The point of this video was that the game designers of this video game didn’t realize that the particular gesture shown in the photo was the sign “lesbian”. It’s similar to the situation where you see many photos of rock stars making what they think are the sign of the devil or something like that, but look a LOT like the sign “bullsh*t”
I am fluent in both hearing and deaf worlds. I find this video cute. I am sure it was not meant to be the sign for “lesbian”, but for the character named “Luigi”. Although, some people may catch it, mainly the deaf world. The hearing world, who are not familiar with the sign language, wouldn’t catch on. The deafies should not take it too personally. I am proud of the language and it should be recognized from both worlds.
